Following the expiration of the transitional period, Entry 77 of REACH Annex XVII-the restrictive amendment governing formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing substances-has officially entered into full force across the European Union as of August 6, 2026.

This regulatory milestone effectively slashes permissible formaldehyde emissions by 50%. Under these stringent thresholds, all articles placed on the EU market must comply with rigorous new limits on formaldehyde release into indoor air. Specifically, a ceiling of 0.062 mg/m³ has been mandated for wood-based products and furniture. For all other consumer and industrial goods capable of emitting formaldehyde-including textiles, footwear, coated paper, and electronic casings-the limit is capped at 0.080 mg/m³. Non-compliant items, or goods incorporating adhesives, resins, or auxiliaries that exceed these criteria, now face immediate border rejection, market withdrawal, or mandatory product recalls at EU customs starting this month.
To safeguard global export volumes, Chinese R&D institutes and major chemical enterprises are aggressively accelerating the development of innovative aldehyde-free curing agents, eco-friendly leather tanning agents, and low-VOC solvents. Concurrently, European manufacturers are transitioning entirely to higher-cost, formaldehyde-free alternatives, such as polyurethane MDI and bio-based adhesives. Consequently, this systemic shift has triggered a short-term surge of 15% to 25% in production costs for domestic European furniture industries.
