Xanthan Gum

Introduction

Xanthan gum exhibits unique rheological properties, good water solubility, thermal and acid/alkali stability, and excellent compatibility with various salts. As a thickener, suspending agent, emulsifier, and stabiliser, it is currently the world's largest-scale microbial polysaccharide with an extremely wide range of applications.

Product Grades

Food Grade

Viscosity of 1% solution≥600 mPa·s; total plate count≤5,000 CFU/g; Salmonella not detected. Widely used as a food additive in beverages, dairy products, and more.

Industrial Grade

Emphasis on high viscosity (typically≥1,200 mPa·s) and resistance to heat and salt. Used in drilling muds, coatings, and pesticide suspension concentrates.

Pharmaceutical Grade

Used as a pharmaceutical excipient (suspending agent, binder). Strict limits on heavy metals, arsenic, and microbial content (e.g., aerobic bacteria≤10³ CFU/g).

Feed Grade

Used for binding and stabilising in animal feed. Standards are relatively lenient, with focus on active content and safety.

Reagent Grade

Used in biological experiments, with emphasis on sterility or specific purity requirements.

Standard stock items are industrial grade. For special-grade orders, please contact us for full documentation.

Xanthan gum Used in the Petroleum Industry

In drilling fluids, xanthan gum serves as a thickener to improve mud carrying capacity; in enhanced oil recovery, it is used to increase crude oil extraction efficiency.

Xanthan gum Used in the Agriculture Industry

Xanthan gum is used in pesticide suspension concentrates to improve spray performance and adhesion.

Xanthan gum Used in the Ceramic Industry

In ceramics, xanthan gum is primarily used as a high-efficiency suspending agent, rheology modifier, and green body binder. It prevents sedimentation of glazes and slurries, improves coating and application properties, and enhances green body strength.

Xanthan gum Used in the Textile Industry

In the textile industry, xanthan gum is primarily used as a thickener for printing pastes and as a sizing agent for yarns. With its excellent pseudoplastic rheology, acid and salt resistance, easy desizing, and biodegradability, it improves print clarity and processing efficiency.

Xanthan gum Used in the Printing Industry

In papermaking, xanthan gum is used as a surface sizing agent, retention and drainage aid, and coating stabiliser. Leveraging its pseudoplastic rheology (high viscosity at rest, shear-thinning when agitated), it improves paper strength, smoothness, filler retention, and printability.
