Calcium Sulphate

Introduction

Calcium sulfate is an inorganic compound, white crystalline powder, odourless, with an astringent taste. Slightly soluble in water and glycerol; insoluble in ethanol. Hygroscopic in nature, typically containing two molecules of water of crystallisation. Occurs naturally as gypsum.

Product Grades

Food grade

CaSO₄≥ 98% (on anhydrous basis); strict limits on heavy metals and loss on drying. Used as a coagulant for soy products, flour treatment agent and texturiser.

Pharmaceutical grade

CaSO₄≥ 99.0% (on ignited basis); stringent requirements for pH, heavy metals (≤ 0.001%) and arsenic (≤ 0.001%). Used as a diluent and filler in pharmaceutical formulations.

Industrial grade

Purity 90%–95% (some high-purity products up to 99%). Used in cement retarders, plasterboard, ceramic moulds and soil conditioners.

Calcium Sulfate Used in the Food Industry

Food‑grade calcium sulfate is commonly utilised as a coagulant for tofu production. It also functions as a flour‑treatment agent, dough conditioner, texture enhancer for canned products, and water‑hardening agent in brewing processes.

Pharmaceutical‑grade calcium sulfate is utilised as a raw material for the production of bone‑defect filling products, fracture‑fixation components and dental modelling materials.

Calcium Sulfate Used in the Construction Industry

Calcium sulfate – the primary raw material for plasterboard, gypsum blocks and gypsum mouldings. Offers fire resistance, sound insulation and thermal insulation properties.
