Toluene

Introduction

Toluene is an organic compound belonging to the aromatic hydrocarbon family. It is a colourless, highly volatile liquid with a distinctive aromatic odour and strong refractive properties. It is miscible with ethanol, ether, acetone, chloroform, carbon disulfide, and glacial acetic acid, but is immiscible with water.

Product Grades

Industrial Grade

Main content typically ≥95% or ≥99.5%. Used in paint thinners, inks, adhesives, and as a bulk synthetic feedstock.

Reagent Grade

Purity ≥99% (CP) or ≥99.5% (AR). Used in routine laboratory analysis, small-scale synthesis, and reagent preparation.

Chromatographic Grade

Purity ≥99.8%–99.9%. Specifically designed for use as a mobile phase in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and for spectroscopic analysis. Strictly controlled for UV background absorption, fluorescent impurities, water content (typically <0.03%), and evaporation residue (<2 ppm) to ensure no interfering peaks.

Pharmaceutical Grade

Purity ≥99.9%. Used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates. In addition to high purity, strict limits are placed on sulfides, heavy metals, and specific organic impurities.

Standard stock items are industrial grade. For special-grade orders, please contact us for full documentation.

Uses and Applications

Key applications

  • Disinfectant
  • Ink, Toner and Colourant
  • Lacquers
  • Leather Processing
  • Adhesives and Sealants
  • Personal Care
  • Paint and Coatings
  • Rubber

Toluene Used in the Coating Industry

In the coatings industry, toluene effectively dissolves a wide range of resin components, such as alkyd resins and acrylic resins. Based on formulation experience, the appropriate addition of toluene adjusts coating viscosity, improving flow and levelling during application to form a uniform, smooth film.

Toluene Used in the Spice Industry

Toluene serves as a key feedstock in fragrance synthesis – producing aldehyde-based aromatics with floral, fruity, and other scent profiles through multi-step reactions.

Toluene Used in the Rubber Industry

Toluene is a commonly used solvent in the rubber industry. It dissolves natural rubber and various synthetic rubbers, and its moderate evaporation rate facilitates process control, helping to improve product quality and performance.

Toluene Used in the Energy Industry

Toluene can be used as a fuel additive to increase the octane rating of gasoline.

Toluene Used in the Plastic Industry

Toluene is used in the production of polystyrene, serving both as a reaction solvent and a reactant in the polymerisation process. Under suitable conditions, styrene monomers polymerise in the toluene system to produce polystyrene products of various specifications and properties.

Toluene Used in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Toluene serves as an important raw material for the synthesis of multiple pharmaceutical substances. For instance, during the manufacturing of anti‑infective preparations, toluene is subject to multi‑step chemical transformations for building key structural moieties of drug molecules.

Toluene Used in the Electric Industry

Toluene is used in the electric industry for cleaning precision components. Its excellent solubility and volatility enable rapid and effective removal of oils and contaminants from component surfaces, without causing corrosion or damage.

Toluene Used in the Pesticide ndustry

In pesticide synthesis, toluene is converted through a series of chemical reactions into active ingredients with insecticidal, fungicidal, and herbicidal properties.

Toluene Used in the Inking ndustry

Toluene is used as an aromatic solvent in inks–dissolving resins, lowering viscosity, controlling drying speed, and enhancing flow.
