Xylene

Introduction

Xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon with three isomers: ortho-xylene (1,2-dimethylbenzene), meta-xylene (1,3-dimethylbenzene), and para-xylene (1,4-dimethylbenzene). All are colourless, flammable liquids, insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, and benzene. Additionally, meta-xylene and para-xylene are readily soluble in chloroform, while ortho-xylene is soluble in petroleum ether and carbon tetrachloride.

Product Grades

Solvent Grade

Total aromatics content approximately 97%. Primarily used as a solvent for paints, coatings, inks, and as a gasoline additive. Purity requirements for individual isomers are relatively low.

Isomer Grade

Total aromatics content≥99%. Ethylbenzene content is typically limited (e.g., <18%-20%). Used for the separation and purification of ortho/para-xylene to produce high-purity monomers such as PTA and fibres.

Crude Xylene

Lower aromatics content with higher levels of non-aromatic impurities. Requires further refining before use.

Standard stock items are industrial grade. For special-grade orders, please contact us for full documentation.

Uses and Applications

Key applications

  • Agricultural
  • Solvents
  • Paint and Coatings
  • Rubber

Industries

Xylene Used in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Within hospital pathology laboratories, xylene is applied for clearing and dewaxing during tissue specimen preparation (for in‑vitro diagnostic use only).

2

Xylene Used in the Energy Industry

Xylene can be used as a high-octane gasoline component to improve anti-knock performance, and also as a constituent of aviation fuels.

Xylene Used in the Dye Industry

Xylene is used in the dye industry as a solvent or intermediate for certain dyes.

4

Xylene Used in the Pesticide Industry

Meta-xylene can be converted into isophthalonitrile, which is used in the production of fungicides.

Xylene Used in the Coating Industry

● Drying Performance Control: Acts as a paint thinner to balance evaporation rate, preventing orange peel or cracking in the coating.

● Gloss Enhancement: Optimises coating formulations to improve surface reflectivity, resulting in a brighter, smoother film.

6

Xylene Used in the Textile Industry

Paraxylene is the main raw material for synthesizing high-strength, high-elasticity polyester fibers.

Xylene Used in the Chemical Manufacturing Industry

Xylene is a core raw material for the production of terephthalic acid (PTA), and is also widely used in the preparation of other chemicals such as benzoic acid and benzaldehyde.

Xylene Used in the Ink Industry

Xylene is used as a solvent in inks to adjust viscosity and drying speed, ensuring smooth ink transfer and producing clear printing patterns with vibrant colors. It is widely applied in the printing of packaging boxes and publications.

Xylene Used in the Rubber Industry

Xylene can dissolve certain components in rubber, facilitating processes such as mixing and plasticating, thereby improving the quality and performance of rubber products. It can be used in the manufacture of tires, rubber hoses, and similar products.

Xylene Used in the Electric Industry

During production and use, electronic components can become contaminated with various pollutants. Xylene, with its excellent solubility and volatility, can quickly dissolve impurities such as grease and oil, and evaporates without leaving any residue, thereby preventing electronic equipment failures caused by contaminants.

Xylene Used in the Spice Industry

Xylene can dissolve fragrance components and has a certain volatility, allowing it to slowly release the aroma during use. At the same time, its chemical stability helps preserve the fragrance's scent and quality.

Xylene Used in the Adhesive Industry

Xylene is used in adhesive production to improve viscosity and drying speed, enabling strong bonding of various materials. It is widely applied in the bonding of wood, plastics, metals, and other materials.‌‌‌‌
