4-tert-Octylphenol

Introduction

p-tert-Octylphenol (often abbreviated as OP) is an organic compound with the chemical formula C14H22O. It is a colorless to pale yellow solid or viscous liquid (depending on purity and temperature) with a slight phenolic odor. It is an alkylphenol derived from the alkylation of phenol with diisobutylene. It serves as a crucial intermediate in the synthesis of nonionic surfactants (octylphenol ethoxylates) and is widely used in the production of oil-soluble phenolic resins. Its melting point is approximately 40-42°C, and it is insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol, acetone, benzene, and other organic solvents. p-tert-Octylphenol exhibits chemical reactivity typical of phenols, such as electrophilic aromatic substitution, and turns purple or blue when reacted with ferric chloride solution.

Characteristics

Molar Weight 206.32 g/mol

Density 0.94-0.95 g/cm³
Forms Colorless to pale yellow flakes, crystals, or viscous liquid

Product Grades

Reagent Grade

Covers high-purity specifications suitable for laboratory research and analytical standards. It typically has a purity of ≥99.0% or higher, ensuring precise stoichiometry for chemical synthesis and experimental validation.

Industrial Grade

The most common commercial form, divided into standard and refined grades. It is used extensively as a raw material for surfactant manufacturing and resin production. Specifications focus on freezing point and color to ensure downstream product quality.

Pharmaceutical/High Purity Grade

Specifically refined to minimize impurities and isomers. While less common due to regulatory restrictions on alkylphenols in some biological applications, it is required for specialized synthesis where high selectivity is critical.

Industries

Application of p-tert-Octylphenol in Surfactants

p-tert-Octylphenol is the primary feedstock for the production of octylphenol ethoxylates (e.g., Triton X-100). By reacting with ethylene oxide, it forms nonionic surfactants that are highly valued for their excellent wetting, penetrating, emulsifying, and dispersing properties. These derivatives are widely used in industrial cleaning agents, textile processing, pesticide formulations, and latex paint emulsifiers due to their stability in hard water and varying pH levels.

Application of p-tert-Octylphenol in Rubber and Plastics

In the rubber industry, p-tert-Octylphenol is used to produce oil-soluble phenolic resins, which serve as effective tackifiers (stickiness promoters) for synthetic rubbers like SBR and Neoprene. These resins improve the green strength and adhesion of tire components and conveyor belts. Additionally, its derivatives act as antioxidants and stabilizers in plastics, preventing degradation caused by heat and UV light, thereby extending the service life of polymer materials.

Application of p-tert-Octylphenol in Resins

It is a key raw material for synthesizing oil-soluble phenolic resins. Unlike water-soluble phenol-formaldehyde resins, octylphenol-based resins are compatible with oils and organic solvents. These resins are essential in the manufacturing of printing inks (improving gloss and drying speed), surface coatings, and adhesive formulations. They provide excellent water resistance and electrical insulation properties.

Application of p-tert-Octylphenol in Oilfield Chemicals

Due to its lipophilic (oil-loving) nature, p-tert-Octylphenol is utilized in the petroleum industry to create demulsifiers and corrosion inhibitors. Its ethoxylated derivatives help break oil-water emulsions during crude oil extraction and refining. Furthermore, it serves as an intermediate for lubricating oil additives, enhancing the viscosity index and anti-wear performance of industrial lubricants.

Application of p-tert-Octylphenol in Agrochemicals

In the agriculture sector, p-tert-Octylphenol derivatives function as emulsifiers and wetting agents in pesticide formulations (such as emulsifiable concentrates). They ensure that the active ingredients are evenly dispersed in water when sprayed, improving the coverage and absorption of herbicides and insecticides on plant surfaces.
