Oxalic Acid

Introduction

Oxalic acid is an organic acid and belongs to the class of medium-strength acids. It usually appears as colorless monoclinic tabular or prismatic crystals, and can also be in the form of a white powder. It is readily soluble in water, and its acidity is approximately 1000 times stronger than that of acetic acid. It exhibits significant reducing properties and decomposes readily upon heating.

Product Grades

Industrial Grade

The purity typically ranges around 98%. It is primarily employed in metal surface derusting, marble polishing, automotive radiator cleaning, textile printing and dyeing, as well as bleaching applications.

Reagent Grade

Purity generally ranges from 99.0% to over 99.5%. It meets ACS or ISO specifications and is employed in laboratory chemical analysis, as a titrant standard solution, and in precision chemical synthesis.

Electronic Grade

It has an extremely low content of metallic impurity ions. It is specifically used for cleaning and etching processes in the semiconductor and microelectronics industries.

Standard stock items are of industrial grade. For special grade orders, please contact us for complete documentation.

Uses and Applications

Key applications

  • Dyes
  • Metal Working
  • Cleaning Products
  • Reducing Agent
  • Household Industrial
  • Bleaching Agent

Oxalic Acid Used in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Oxalic acid is used as a raw material in the synthesis of antibiotics (terramycin, aureomycin), vitamin B12, borneol, and oxalate ester intermediates.

2

Oxalic Acid Used in the Resin Industry

Oxalic acid is used as an acidity regulator in resin production.

Oxalic Acid Used in the Metallurgical Industry

Oxalic acid serves as a precipitant for the separation and purification of rare earth elements (by forming rare earth oxalate precipitates). It is also used in the production of high-purity metals (such as nickel and cobalt) and in catalyst preparation.

4

Oxalic Acid Used in the Textile Industry

Oxalic acid acts as a reducing bleaching agent for cotton and linen fabrics to remove yellowing and mildew stains, causing relatively little damage to fibers. It is often used in combination with hydrogen peroxide.

Oxalic Acid Used in the Paper Industry

Oxalic acid is used as a reducing bleaching agent for pulp bleaching.

Oxalic Acid Used in the Laboratory

In chemical analysis, oxalic acid is commonly used as a reducing agent and complexing agent-for example, in titrating potassium permanganate solutions to determine their concentration. It is also used to precipitate rare earth elements for separation and purification.

Oxalic Acid Used in the Household Use

Oxalic acid is a powerful rust remover and scale cleaner. It reacts with metal oxides to remove rust and is commonly used for cleaning marble, metal surfaces, and removing limescale-for example, on stainless steel, marble, and ceramic tiles.

Oxalic Acid Used in the Water Treatment Industry

Oxalic acid is used to treat heavy metal contamination and to remove pollutants from wastewater and exhaust gases.
