Formic Acid

Introduction

Formic acid is a weak electrolyte and the simplest fatty acid. It is a colorless, transparent, fuming liquid with a pungent, irritating odor. Contact with skin can cause blistering. It is miscible with water, ethanol, diethyl ether, and glycerol (propanetriol) in all proportions, and is also soluble to some extent (partially miscible) in hydrocarbons.

Industrial Grade

Formic acid is available in concentrations of 85%, 90%, 94%, and 99%. The 85% grade represents the standard commercial concentration, whereas grades of 94% and higher are classified as high-purity industrial products. These are extensively employed in leather tanning, textile dyeing, rubber processing, and agrochemical synthesis.

Reagent Grade

Intended for laboratory applications, this grade is subdivided into chemically pure (CP), analytical reagent (AR), and guaranteed reagent (GR) classifications. GR-grade formic acid generally exhibits a purity of ≥98% or 99%, with rigorous specifications for chlorides, sulfates, ferric ions (≤0.0001%), and non-volatile residues.

Spectroscopic/Ultrapure Grade

Characterized by a minimum purity of 99.9% and negligible impurity profiles, this grade is reserved for high-precision spectroscopic analyses and specialized synthetic procedures. It is seldom stocked as a standard item and typically requires custom manufacturing.

Formic acid is used as a deliming agent, neutralizing agent, and softening agent in leather processing, and also helps prevent wet leather from mildewing.
