Acrylic Acid

Introduction

Acrylic acid is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₃H₄O₂. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent, irritating odor. It is the simplest unsaturated carboxylic acid, consisting of a vinyl group (CH₂=CH−) and a carboxylic acid group (−COOH). It is highly reactive and readily undergoes polymerization, addition, esterification, and neutralization reactions. It is miscible with water, ethanol, ether, and chloroform. Its melting point is 13–14°C, boiling point is 141°C, and density is 1.05 g/cm³. It is classified as a flammable liquid with strong corrosive properties and is handled with appropriate safety precautions.

Industries

Application of Acrylic Acid in Hygiene Products (SAP):

Acrylic acid is the key raw material for producing superabsorbent polymers (SAP), which can absorb hundreds of times their weight in water.

Application of Acrylic Acid in Coatings/Paints:

Acrylic acid is used to produce acrylic esters and copolymers that serve as binders in water-based and solvent-based coatings.

Application of Acrylic Acid in Adhesives/Sealants:

Acrylic acid-derived polymers are essential components in pressure-sensitive adhesives, structural adhesives, and sealants. They provide strong bonding strength, durability.

Application of Acrylic Acid in Textiles:

Acrylic acid is used as a textile sizing agent, fabric treatment chemical, and dye auxiliary. It improves fiber strength, reduces static electricity.

Application of Acrylic Acid in Electronics:

IS used in the production of photoresists, and electronic adhesives. Its ultra-high purity (≥99.99%) meets the stringent requirements of semiconductor manufacturing cleanroom environments.

FAQ

Q1:What transportation safety requirements must be adhered to for acrylic acid?

A: Acrylic acid is classified as UN 2218 Class 8 corrosive substance and must be transported in dedicated tank trucks or certified Type I packaging steel drums. During summer transit, shading or ice-salt bath cooling is required to maintain temperatures at or below 25 ℃. It must never be loaded together with oxidizers or alkaline substances. Transport vehicles must be equipped with leak containment and fire extinguishing equipment. Non-sparking tools are mandatory during loading and unloading operations. Drivers should avoid sudden braking and severe vibrations to prevent mechanical shock that could compromise container integrity or trigger unintended polymerization.

Q2:What first aid measures and personal protective equipment are required for acrylic acid exposure?

A: For skin contact, immediately remove contaminated clothing and rinse with copious water for at least 15 minutes; never use organic solvents for cleaning. For eye contact, lift eyelids and flush with flowing water or saline for 15–20 minutes, then seek medical attention. If inhaled, move to fresh air, maintain unobstructed breathing, administer oxygen if respiration is difficult, and obtain medical care. If ingested, drink adequate warm water, induce vomiting, and seek immediate medical assistance. Required PPE includes chemical splash goggles, butyl rubber gloves, corrosion-resistant protective clothing, and respirators equipped with organic vapor/acid gas cartridges.

Q3:What are the shelf life and quality control requirements for acrylic acid?

A: Unopened qualified acrylic acid typically has a shelf life of 6–12 months depending on inhibitor type and storage conditions; once opened, use within 3 months is recommended. Key quality parameters include purity (≥99.0% industrial grade/≥99.5% refined grade), acid value (≥100% as acrylic acid), color (≤30 Pt-Co), MEHQ inhibitor content (50–150 ppm), moisture (≤0.2%), and metal ion levels. Expired products must be retested against all specifications before use. Cloudiness or micro-gel particles indicate partial polymerization and require disposal. Acid value and inhibitor content should be sampled and verified quarterly to ensure product stability and performance reliability.
