Castor Oil

Introduction

Castor oil is a vegetable oil extracted from castor seeds. Its composition comprises ricinoleic acid 80–85%, oleic acid 7%, linoleic acid 3%, palmitic acid 2%, and stearic acid 1%. Castor oil is combustible but not readily flammable. It is miscible in all proportions with anhydrous ethanol; slightly soluble in aliphatic alkanes; miscible with chloroform, diethyl ether, glacial acetic acid; practically insoluble in water & mineral oils.

Industrial – Class I: Purity ≥99.5%. Acid ≤2.0. Moisture & volatiles ≤0.10%. Impurities ≤0.05%. Colour: light (Lovibond red ≤1.5). Transparency: good. Uses: high-grade lubricants, polyurethanes, coatings, food auxiliaries.

Industrial – Class II: Acid ≤4.0. Moisture & volatiles ≤0.20%. Impurities ≤0.10%. Turbidity: slight permitted. Colour: deeper (red ≤3.5). Uses: general lubrication, soap, basic chemicals.
