Sulphuric Acid

Introduction

Sulfuric acid is an inorganic strong acid that can react with most metals. Pure sulfuric acid is a colorless, oily liquid. At high concentrations, it has strong hygroscopic properties and can be used as a dehydrating agent to carbonize carbohydrate-containing materials such as wood, paper, cotton and linen fabrics, and biological tissues like skin and flesh. When mixed with water, it also releases a large amount of heat.

2

Sulfuric Acid Used in the Metallurgical Industry

Sulfuric acid is used in leaching processes to extract metal ores, including copper, zinc, and aluminium. In metallurgy, it also serves as an oxidising agent and flux.

Sulfuric Acid Used in the Battery Industry

Sulfuric acid is used as battery electrolyte in lead-acid storage systems, typically at 30%–40% concentration.

4

Sulfuric Acid Used in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Sulfuric acid is used in the synthesis of antibiotics, sulfonamide pharmaceuticals, and vitamins.

Sulfuric Acid Used in the Electric Industry

High-purity sulfuric acid (electronic grade) is used in wafer cleaning, photoresist stripping, and etching, with extremely low metal ion content requirements (G1–G5 grades).

6

Sulfuric Acid Used in the Water Treatment Industry

Sulfuric acid is used in water treatment (pH adjustment and ion exchange resin regeneration), as well as in leather tanning and papermaking.

Sulfuric Acid Used in the Laboratory

Sulfuric acid is commonly used in laboratories as a dehydrating agent, drying agent, and sulfonating agent.

8

Sulfuric Acid Used in the Textile Industry

Sulfuric acid is used in the textile industry as a decolourising agent for dyes and fibres. It removes pigments and impurities from fibres, improving the effectiveness of dyeing and bleaching processes.

Sulfuric Acid Used in the Energy Industry

Sulfuric acid serves as a catalyst in the synthesis of fuel ethanol and butanol, promoting reactions and improving yield and purity.

10

Sulfuric Acid Used in the Food Industry

Sulfuric acid serves as an acidity‑adjusting agent and decolourising agent for food‑processing applications. It is utilised in the manufacturing of jellies, pickled goods and sauces for pH adjustment and colour removal during production.

Sulfuric Acid Used in the Metalworking Industry

Sulfuric acid is used as a pickling agent to remove dirt and oxides from metal surfaces. In electroplating, it also serves as a desalting agent to eliminate salt deposits on metal surfaces.
